Franchise Ownership FAQ
Get answers to the questions people ask most about investing in a franchise, the discovery process, and what to expect as you explore what's possible.
Investing in a Franchise
- How much money do I need to invest in a franchise?
Franchise investments vary widely depending on the business. Kim will help you focus on opportunities that fit your financial picture so you can spend your time exploring possibilities that make sense for you.
- How do people fund a franchise investment?
There are several ways to fund a franchise investment. If funding is part of your plan, Kim can introduce you to experienced franchise lenders and funding professionals who can explain your options and help you determine what may work for you.
- How long until a franchise is profitable?
Every business is different, and there is no guaranteed timeline to profitability. During discovery, you’ll have the opportunity to review the franchisor’s financial information, talk directly with existing franchise owners and gather the information you need to form your own expectations about the opportunity.
- Is franchising less risky than starting my own business?
They’re two different paths to business ownership. With a franchise, you’re investing in an established model with training, systems and ongoing support. Starting from scratch gives you the freedom to create the model yourself. Both involve risk. Discovery gives you the opportunity to understand franchising and decide which path feels right for you.
Choosing the Right Franchise
- How do I choose between franchise opportunities?
You don’t have to figure it out alone. Kim will guide you as you explore each opportunity, helping you know what questions to ask, what to look for and how what you’re learning aligns with the goals you set at the beginning. Stay curious and open; the right fit often becomes clear as you move through discovery.
- What is a Franchise Disclosure Document?
The Franchise Disclosure Document, or FDD, is a required document that gives you detailed information about a franchise opportunity. You’ll receive one during discovery, and Kim will help you understand where it fits into the bigger picture as you evaluate the business.
- Do I need experience in the industry?
Often, no. Franchisors typically provide training on their business, products, services and systems. Your leadership, sales, management and professional experience may be far more transferable to franchise ownership than you realize.
- What questions should I ask an existing franchisee?
Talking with existing franchise owners is one of the most valuable - and often most exciting - parts of discovery. You get to hear directly from people living the business every day and learn what ownership really looks like. Kim will help you prepare for those conversations so you know what to ask, what to listen for and how to get the most from them.
Making the Move to Business Ownership
- Can corporate professionals successfully transition into franchise ownership?
Absolutely. Your career may have prepared you for business ownership in more ways than you realize. Leadership, sales, problem-solving, managing people and making decisions are all valuable skills you can bring with you. The franchise provides the model, systems and training - you bring your experience and the desire to build something of your own.
- How is business ownership different from a salary?
A salary is income you earn from an employer. Business ownership gives you the opportunity to create cash flow you own and control while building an asset of your own.
- Do I need a franchise consultant?
No - you can absolutely explore franchise ownership on your own. But you don’t have to. Kim brings over 20 years of franchise experience, relationships and perspective to your search, helping you explore the right opportunities, ask better questions and navigate discovery with confidence. And there’s no cost to you for her guidance.
