Buying a Business

Seven franchise industries built for long-term wealth

Kim Daly - April 2025 - 7 min read

Before any list of industries, one thing has to be said plainly: when you own a business, you are the only one who controls your results. Earnings claims in franchising are tightly regulated for good reason. A franchisor's numbers describe their system, not your potential. You could underperform them, or you could multiply them.

What 'wealth-building' actually means here

An industry with the potential to build wealth is one with long-term sustainability: products and services people both want and need, in a model that affords scale.

Wealth is never built from one location, one team or one truck. It is built through leverage of time and resources across multiple locations, teams and trucks. Franchising was designed for that leverage, through systems, processes, training and a focus on proper capitalisation, and franchisors actively push owners to think like CEOs rather than operators.

These are the seven categories I believe carry those characteristics. This is opinion, not a promise of results.

7. Products and services for children and families

Parents spend on their children and hate saying no. Education support, sport, music, art, tutoring and party experiences are all long-term categories with steady demand and strong referral dynamics.

6. Services for an ageing population

We are all getting older, families are geographically spread, and working adults often cannot provide daytime care. With rising rates of dementia, specialist skills matter.

This industry rewards owners with a genuine heart to serve. For the right person it is both a calling and a durable business.

5. Fitness and weight loss

Demand is permanent and the category keeps reinventing the hook: group formats, accountability, coaching, nutrition. Even people who know exactly how to train still pay for structure and motivation.

4. Wellness and anti-ageing

Recovery, immunity and longevity services have expanded rapidly: cold plunge, infrared, sauna, drip bars, oxygen, medspa. This category suits early adopters who enjoy giving people something they want as much as something they need.

3. Beauty

Hair, skin, nails and lashes are among the most recession-resistant purchases there are. Small, regular investments in how people feel about themselves hold up when larger spending does not.

2. Pet services

Pets are family. Grooming, daycare, boarding, training and health services have all expanded since the pandemic pet boom, and the emotional spend behind them is remarkably resilient.

1. Home services

Whatever the economy does, people spend on their homes, sometimes because they want to and sometimes because they have to. Inside and out, one-time projects and recurring contracts, this is a vast category with hundreds of franchise systems.

Do not rule yourself out for lacking a trade background. Most home services franchises are built for owners who lead, hire and market, not owners who swing the hammer.

Industry is the second question

The first question is still your role, your capital and the life you want. Pick the industry that fits those answers and can scale, and you have the conditions for wealth. Pick an industry because it is trending and you have a hobby with overheads.
